“Explore History” contest winners receive living history presentations

For its tenth anniversary as a nonprofit, Singing Creek Educational Center (SCEC) held a contest this Spring for local school districts. Three winning schools were chosen to receive free living history programs in their 4th grade classrooms. The districts for the contest were 4J, Bethel, and Creswell/South Lane.

The winning schools are Creslane Elementary, Fairfield Elementary, and Cesar Chavez Elementary. The fourth graders will receive these three programs: Hudson’s Bay Company Fur Trappers, Kalapuya Ways, and Letters From the Trail. Each presentation is 30 minutes long and includes hands-on exploration of historical items. The Letters From the Trail program includes a visit from “Mrs. Annabelle Smith,” newly arrived from the Oregon Trail in the year 1856. She tells stories of her adventures, takes questions in character, and leaves 15 handwritten letters by children on the overland journey for the students to read and discuss. All the presentations are aligned with core standards for teaching to 4th grade in Oregon.

Amy Halley, Principal of Fairfield Elementary says “We are honored to be selected as a winner in the Explore History contest and grateful for this opportunity to bring engaging, high-quality historical presentations into our classrooms. These experiences will enrich our students’ learning and spark curiosity about the past.”

The contest allows schools to participate in living history for their students at a time when funding for such programs may be limited or in jeopardy. Karen Rainsong, Executive Director of SCEC notes that “Schools want these programs, but with the current environment of instability, they may be afraid to commit right now. With this contest we are celebrating our tenth year by giving back to local schools.”

SCEC travels throughout Western Oregon to provide meaningful and engaging living history to children and families. It has been in operation for 19 years (a nonprofit for the past ten) and currently is headquartered in the Cottage Grove area. SCEC is committed to exploring history in meaningful ways, including diverse perspectives and voices.

“Teaching history is a chance to explore our past from multiple viewpoints,” says Karen. “It’s a great way to keep our minds resilient and curious. Children learn from our example, so let’s make it a good one!”
