April 8 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Join us for an evening discussion with Stephanie Craig, a Kalapuya woman, at the Creswell Public Library. We will be hearing from Stephanie and talking about the subject “Fear & Belonging” as part of the speaker series “Consider This.” Each year, Oregon Humanities has a different topic for this series. We were lucky enough to receive a grant from Oregon Humanities with the library to offer this series in Creswell.

Our conversation with Stephanie will focus on traditions, the loss of those traditions, and reclaiming or continuing them. Stephanie is an expert on Kalapuya weaving and works to pass that information on. Stephanie’s work and expertise fits very well into the theme of Fear and Belonging. What is more terrifying than watching cultural traditions move from the active world to a museum? And do cultural artifacts belong in museums, and if so, which museums do they belong to? Stephanie’s work weaving replica baskets for museums touches on this perfectly.

These talks are free and open to the public, though might not be appropriate for children. No need to RSVP, you can just attend.

Date: Monday, April 8th
Time: 5:30 pm -6:30pm
Location: Creswell Public Library, 64 W Oregon Ave, Creswell, OR 97426

Our second speaker in this series is Deitrich Peters, an indigenous regalia maker, flute player and culture-bearer. Deitz’s talk is on April 25th at 5:30pm.

Stephanie Craig Bio

My name is Stephanie. I’m the owner of Kalapuya Weaving and Consulting. Following my personal life and educational career experiences, I created a small business where I teach basket weaving classes to private and public venues, work with agencies both state and federal, museums and Tribal museums with cultural resource management, belongings conservation, produce museum quality basketry replicas, provide cultural education, presentations and continue the traditions of my Grandmothers and family before me. My goal is to help educate and pass on my knowledge to others.
