Leticia Carson exhibit at SMJ

Opening Reception: Leticia Carson Black History Exhibit at the SMJ House

Join us to learn about Leticia Carson, the first Black woman to settle in Oregon, as you tour the beautiful Shelton McMurphey Johnson House in Eugene.

This is a traveling exhibit from Oregon Black Pioneers and will be up at the SMJ House from June – September, 2025. The exhibit is a partnership between SCEC and the SMJ House. We are committed to exploring, understanding and highlighting history from all sides, including underrepresented and marginalized groups.

Read a book about Leticia Carson’s story:

A Light in the Wilderness, by Jane Kirkpatrick
