Our costumed interpreter will take you back in time at the Shelton McMurphey Johnson House\, the area’s only Victorian house museum. Gather in the parlor (wear your historic clothing if you like!) and enjoy the first-person interpretation and receive your own letter from a pioneer boy or girl on the trail. Use our curriculum to answer questions about it on the sheet provided\, which helps you think more deeply about the Oregon Trail and the real life experiences of families undergoing this epic journey.\nWhat a wonderful day of connecting with local history!\nCost: $10 each participating child. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a wonderful day of creating seasonal gifts!\nMake some candles and mini holiday wreaths to decorate a tree. For candles\, we will fill molds and do some dipping into hot wax\, just like the pioneers did– on the wood burning stove. (With adult close supervision.) Decorate your own mini wreath with pinecones\, ribbons\, dried natural items and a few glittery items. \nSupplies and instruction are included for your $10 fee per person. Bring your old broken candle pieces to add to the bubbling pot\, and any special trinkets you would like to add to a tiny wreath- (about 4 inches wide). \nClass is on Saturday November 17th from 1pm -3pm. \nThis class is for registered Girl Scouts only and you will need to register on their website. \n \nPlease wear clothes you can get dirty in. SUMMARY:Homestead Arts: Basket Making
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday November 9\, 2018 and make your own simple basket to take home. Our guest instructor\, Cheryl Chambers\, has been teaching this class for years\, mostly to senior citizens and local centers. We provide all the materials and instruction. Best for ages 10 and up. \nCost is $10 per basket made (two people can work on one basket if you like.) \nThe class is two hours so that you can finish a simple basket in that time. We provide hot tea in our cozy granary building\, our “pioneer homestead” building. This is a great way to make a gift for someone and have fun! DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, June 9th as we put in our new pioneer garden for the year! We use this garden all year long\, for summer camps\, homeschool classes and more. The property owners\, Tom and Sue\, are generous enough to share space in their fenced garden and provide the water\, but we need to provide everything else- including people-power! This is a work party so it is FREE!!!! Sign up by emailing our Director at karen@singingcreekcenter.org. \nWe provide some tools and lots of plants and seeds. You can bring your own tools if you like\, we will have a few on hand to share. \n\nWe are so excited to add a feature to the Pioneer Garden Day; we now have a local beekeeper and educator\, Jen Hornaday\, coming to teach us all about pollinators and why they are important\, and show us a demonstration hive (the bees are enclosed) and teach us the bee “waggle dance”. We will also learn about some important things we can do in our own gardens at home to help the bees and other pollinators. \n\nShe runs a non profit called “Healthy Bees\, Healthy Gardens” and does education for kids in the area. She will be bringing out some jars of her local honey to sell. SUMMARY:Travel in Time Field Trips for teachers- Spring 2018
DESCRIPTION:Go back in time and experience local history on our beautiful family farm! Your 3rd – 5th grade school group will learn about life as a pioneer\, trapper\, and Kalapuya Indian with hands-on experience\, outdoor activities and more. The trip begins at our pioneer homestead\, a historic granary building\, then your class with break into three groups that will have different adventures with a costumed interpreter as a guide. The Kalapuya group will go to a beautiful camp under the trees to learn about foods\, housing\, tools\, language and more. Trappers will walk to a camp spot with a tent and cooking ring\, sit on tree stumps and learn about trade\, early tools\, lifestyle\, and animals then go for a walk to the pond to search for tracks. The pioneer group will start at the granary and learn about early schooling\, work the loom and go for a nature walk to the creek to record observations in their field journals. Each group will make a craft to take home. \nWe re-convene at the granary for a final wrap up and to get back on the bus. There is a pioneer one room schoolhouse on the property\, next to the farm store and commercial kitchen\, which you will probably see as you approach our driveway. It is not available for our field trips\, however\, the Camas Country Mill has field trips there for students during the school year. (You may contact them directly to book a trip there.) Thanks for your cooperation! \nPlease let us know if you have special needs in your group or severe allergies. \nPricing: $4.50 per child\, with a $50 minimum. Adult Chaperones are free.\nIf you have a small group we can do the field trip with one or two groups\, such as pioneer only\, or pioneer and Kalapuya group only.  Our maximum is 35 kids. \n12 children or less\, ONE GROUP\n13-21 children\, TWO GROUPS\n22-35 children\, THREE GROUPS \nField trips last for two hours and are usually scheduled from 9:30am to 11:30am. We do not have facilities for groups over 15 to stay and eat their lunches\, unless you can sit outdoors on the grass (good weather.) If your group is 15 or under and you would like to use the granary for lunch\, please let us know in advance.  There is an additional fee of $20 to stay for lunch. \nLiability release waivers will need to be collected for all persons attending the field trips\, including adult chaperones. Supplies and instruction are included for your $10 fee per person. DESCRIPTION:[cmsms_row data_padding_bottom=”30″ data_padding_top=”0″ data_color=”default” data_width=”boxed”][cmsms_column data_width=”1/1″][cmsms_text animation_delay=”0″] \nJoin us for a wonderful Old Fashioned Halloween party! \nCome celebrate Halloween this year at Singing Creek Educational Center on Friday October 27th at 3:30pm!\nSpecially designed for children ages 5-12 years\, this event features vintage crafts\, games with prizes\, and a special shadow puppet play!  We will have baked goodies and hot drinks on hand for purchase. All proceeds benefit the SCEC. The cost is $10 per child\, and adults are free. Pre-registration and payment is required.\nWhat are vintage crafts? We’re glad you asked. In keeping with our pioneer historical theme\, these crafts are made with natural supplies and there is minimal plastic or “modern” ingredients used. We make witches brooms with raffia\, paper lanterns painted by your child\, lavender ghosts with white fabric\, play the “apple snap” game and more. DESCRIPTION:Go back in time and live like an Oregon settler in 1850 at our pioneer education center. The family farm includes a pond\, chickens\, garden\, one-room schoolhouse\, and a pioneer “homestead”. We can provide pioneer clothing like bonnets and aprons or you can wear your own. Complete with fun activities\, authentic “chores” and crafts. DESCRIPTION:Join the Lane County History Museum and Singing Creek Educational Center on their Historic Homes Tour and Reception for a fun evening of history and good company.\nTour begins at the Mim’s House\, 330 High Street\, Eugene.\nStart with a walking tour of the historic East Skinner Butte Neighborhood\, led by Bob Hart and Faith Kresky of the Lane County History Museum. Learn about the area and specifics about the surviving historic homes of this area. Afterwards join us for a gathering at the Pironi House for a wine and cheese reception\, socializing\, and updates on what each organization is doing to promote our exciting local history. The reception will be held at the historic home of Sherrill Necessary and Doug Partridge. Hear all about the amazing “built-in” features of this craftsman home. \n \nSpots are limited; pre-registration is required. Ticket prices are $20 per person or $35 for a couple.
