SUMMARY:Save the Earth Poster Contest Entry Deadline and Judging
DESCRIPTION:Friday April 8th at 10am is the deadline for submissions to our Save the Earth children’s poster art contest. \nPosters must be 22″ x 28″ and able to be hung on a wall with tape. They must be brought to Creslane Elementary School library on the morning of April 8th\, with the required info on the back. We will have a professional photographer there to photograph them and we will return them to your school or you can pick them up from the library when we are done with them. Judging will happen online; our judges are the board members of SCEC.  \nChildren in grades 2 – 5 in the Cottage Grove/ Creswell/ Dorena areas can apply for this contest either with their classroom or a homeschool group. We will start in historic downtown Cottage Grove and travel to Walden\, where she wrote her famous diary. You will also get to see sites where famous movies like Animal House\, The General and Stand By Me were filmed. Find great places to hike or bike along the beautiful Row River Trail. DESCRIPTION:Homesteading Summer Camp\nGIRL SCOUTS: This camp is suitable for earning your “Playing the Past” badge!\nOur theme is homesteading\, as in the books “Little House on the Prairie.” Each day will provide some structured learning activities\, arts and crafts\, and play time. Some of our favorite activites are: sewing\, playing school\, churning butter\, grinding grain\, washing clothes on the washboard\, making herbal medicines\, and learning games. See our blog post about the “letter writing” component of camp. After you register you will get a more detailed explanation of our schedule\, policies and more.\n \nCamps remain on site of the Singing Creek Educational Center (Snapp House site)\, are pre-pay only\, and sack lunch must be provided each day for your child. Boys and girls age 6-10 are welcome at this camp. Pre-registration is required to attend. If you have any special needs for your child we ask you to let us know in advance. Carpools are often arranged by the participants. Also\, if you have an older child (ages 11 and up) who has attended our camp before and would like to attend as a junior camp helper\, talk to us for information. Junior camp helpers pay a reduced fee to participate (see below.) \nWe will be following protocols to stay safe during coronavirus such as additional handwashing and our instructor may be wearing a face mask. \n  \nAugust 17th – 21st: Homesteading Camp- THREE SPOTS LEFT \nEach camp will feature crafts\, games\, stories\, outside exploration\, walking field trips in the park\, cooking\, and more! Enjoy visits from special guests who will teach us\, trade with us\, or share stories. Our location is a beautiful historic house. Read about the values children learn in our summer camps. \nCamps are Monday- Friday\, 9am to 3pm\, for children ages 6 to 10 years. Create your own boy or girl doll and dress it up with clothing you create. (Donation $1 per doll)  \nThere is a small entrance fee to come into the fair but it’s well worth it! DESCRIPTION:Join us for a wonderful FREE presentation and class at the Cottage Grove Community Center on Friday\, Jan 24th\, at 1pm.\nWe will hear Mrs. Annabelle Smith tell of her adventures on the Oregon Trail and take questions from the audience. She will bring handwritten letters from boys and girls on the Oregon Trail. Each child will receive a letter and a questionnaire to fill out about their letter. \nThis literature/reading curriculum has been designed by our Executive Director and meets the standards for Fourth Grade in reading\, comprehension\, and writing. The class will be led by an instructor who will pass out the letters and guide you in answering the questions. Your child’s “homework”\, should you choose to do it\, is to write a handwritten letter back to the author in your own words\, using your imagination. Then\, if you like\, mail us a copy and we will post them to our website. \nThis presentation and curriculum is available for teachers to book in their own classrooms for a fee of $50. Mrs. Annabelle Smith will come to you and bring the letters\, and do the presentation for your students. We will email the teacher the curriculum one week ahead of time. DESCRIPTION:Join us and raise a glass to Singing Creek Educational Center! This is a holiday party and will feature live music by the band “Some Have Beards”. They graced us with wonderful fiddle and old-time music last year at this event. One dollar for every beer sold throughout the day will go toward SCEC\, helping us bring history to life for the whole community.  \nOakshire Brewing is on 3rd and Madison in the Whiteaker Neighborhood of Eugene. Starting at 5pm members of the SCEC board and advisory council will be there to chat with all about our newest endeavors. DESCRIPTION:Even with a local apothecary\, early settlers relied mainly on their local herb gardens to provide basic medicine. Learn to make a variety of healing skin creams\, lip balms\, herbal salves and tinctures for gifts or a treat for yourself. Take home some lip balm and herbal skin cream. \nClass is taught by Kevin Prier\, and is held at the Snapp House in Cottage Grove\, at 360 S. River Road. \nAll supplies and instruction included. DESCRIPTION:Go back in time and live like an Oregon settler in 1890 at the historic Dr. Snapp House. Built in 1886\, this home is in a park next to the Coast Fork Willamette River. Pioneer dress-up clothes and bonnets are available or bring your own. Fun activities and authentic “chores” and crafts await you in this class where you can earn your Playing the Past badge in a truly unique and hands-on way. Activities may include: churning butter\, grinding grain\, finger crocheting\, sewing\, square dancing\, quill pen writing\, make a pioneer toy and more! Girl Scout badge earned: Junior Playing the Past (badge not included with registration). For Juniors level Girl Scouts Only. DESCRIPTION:CLASS IS FULL- PLEASE CHECK BACK AGAIN IN SPRINGBefore reliable refrigeration\, anyone with a cow would know the process to turn any excess milk into cheese so it wouldn’t spoil. We will make a fresh hard cheese from whole milk and a cheese culture\, and learn about different hard and soft cheese cultures and processes. We will go through the entire process from cultured milk to formed cheese ready for the press. We will also go over how to make yogurt and kefir. \nThis class is taught by our instructor Kevin Prier\, at the Snapp House at 360 S.
