The camp is taught by Janet Hernandez\, our Program Coordinator for the Los Pueblos programs. \nJanet has been teaching for SCEC since 2023 and is a mother of 4 children. She is bilingual English/Spanish and both languages are used in this camp. Children are often speaking in Mam (from Guatemala) as well. \nQualifying low-income families in Cottage Grove who are Guatemalan/Latino are eligible for this camp. We can only take 11 children. SUMMARY:Spring Outdoor School Teaching- Kalapuya Ways
DESCRIPTION:Each year in Spring and Fall\, SCEC teaches the Kalapuya Ways program for Outdoor School in the Dorena area\, for hundreds of children. \nWe provide a 45 minute unit on the First Peoples of the Willamette Valley area\, including either a stick dice game activity or throwing atlatls in the field (if the weather is good.) Children at outdoor school rotate between activities including our teaching. \nWe have been providing this education for Grove Christian Camp for many years\, and are happy to once again be participating in Spring 2025.

Opal was a nature lover who kept a childhood diary relating her adventures in the woods around Cottage Grove in 1905\, including her “explores” with her animal friends. We will make fairy houses\, create a journal and write and sketch in nature\, play games outside\, and discover homesteading life. \nEnjoy visits from special guests who teach us about fiber arts and how to take care of the Earth and reduce our waste. Opal would appreciate our lessons on how to be kind to all beings and the Earth. \nWe’ll have lots of fun as we learn to appreciate Opal’s youthful relationship to the natural world. SUMMARY:Earth Ways Summer Camp 2025
DESCRIPTION:Monday – Friday\, Aug 4 – 8\, 9am to 3pm \nLearn about indigenous ways of the Kalapuya and other Native tribes in this outdoor camp at Prospector’s Park. This day camp (9am – 3pm) includes special guest Native people who will share about culture\, traditional crafts\, and music. Learn some words in the Kalapuya language\, make a leather pouch\, learn about Pacific Northwest art forms and hear traditional stories. This camp is best for ages 7 – 11 and has a max of eleven students. \nThe park has a covered picnic table shelter\, port a potty\, and is right next to the Coast Fork of the Willamette River. We will go across on the swinging bridge\, and go on nature walks. Students will try out the atlatl (spear throwing tool) and play games of sport. The river has several safe places where children can wade in shallow water and look for creatures. We treat all beings with respect and release back all creatures we find. SUMMARY:Grandparent's Tea at the SMJ House - Sept 7th
DESCRIPTION:Honor your Grandparent or Grandfriend!\nEnjoy a lovely sit down formal tea with your grandparent or grandfriend with Singing Creek Educational Center! \nThis family oriented tea will be at the historic Shelton McMurphey Johnson house\, a Victorian mansion in Eugene. The event will feature two different flights of tea and treats\, and live Celtic harp music. Each senior aged 60 and up will be invited to select a handmade gift from our gift table. Each attendee can take a paper heart and write the names of their beloved grandparents and “grandfriends” to string up around the room. In this way all our loved ones can be with us at the tea\, whether they are still alive or not. It’s a great way to include relatives that live out of town! Feel free to dress up in historic dress (a fancy hat?) as our servers will also be in historic dress. \nPre-registration required; seating is limited. \nOne hundred percent of the ticket price supports our non-profit and helps us continue our fun history-based programs for kids and families in Oregon. \nPrevious tea events have been located at the Camas Country Mill Schoolhouse in Junction City and the Dr. Snapp House in Cottage Grove. SUMMARY:Wild Ways Family Days: Map and Compass Oct 16
DESCRIPTION:This family-oriented series of classes will get you outside learning skills and connecting with nature. Our location is the beautiful Dorris Ranch Living History Village in Springfield\, Oregon.\nMap\, Compass and Navigation 101\n9:30am – NoonThursday\, October 16 or Sunday\, Oct 19th \n$50/family $35/individual \nMin 8\, Max 15 students (counting ages 7+) \nBring water bottles\, snacks\, and dress to be outside. Optional: bring a sack lunch and enjoy a picnic at the Living History Village with the group after the class. \nGet outside and hands-on with Singing Creek Educational Center and Wild Alive Outside\, a family-centered wilderness skills series for all ages. Each workshop focuses on one or more wilderness skills—knots\, navigation\, shelters\, fire-building\, basketry\, carving\, plant identification\, nature journaling and more—practical learning in a safe\, supportive environment. \nMap\, compass\, and Navigation 101: This workshop introduces the cardinal directions\, basics of reading a map\, using a compass to take a bearing\, and more. \nNo prior experience needed.
