SUMMARY:Letters From the Trail Presentation and Class
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a wonderful FREE presentation and class at the Cottage Grove Community Center on Friday\, Jan 24th\, at 1pm.\nWe will hear Mrs. Annabelle Smith tell of her adventures on the Oregon Trail and take questions from the audience. She will bring handwritten letters from boys and girls on the Oregon Trail. Each child will receive a letter and a questionnaire to fill out about their letter. \nThis literature/reading curriculum has been designed by our Executive Director and meets the standards for Fourth Grade in reading\, comprehension\, and writing. The class will be led by an instructor who will pass out the letters and guide you in answering the questions. Your child’s “homework”\, should you choose to do it\, is to write a handwritten letter back to the author in your own words\, using your imagination. Then\, if you like\, mail us a copy and we will post them to our website. \nThis presentation and curriculum is available for teachers to book in their own classrooms for a fee of $50. Mrs. Annabelle Smith will come to you and bring the letters\, and do the presentation for your students. We will email the teacher the curriculum one week ahead of time. For more information\, see this page: https://www.singingcreekcenter.org/letters-trail-program/ \nPlease RSVP to let us know you will be coming so we know how many letters and questionnaires to bring. \nDetails:This class is geared towards home-schoolers\, since they won’t have access to this program in a regular classroom setting. But anyone with a child is welcome to come. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This program is best for children ages 8 – 12. If you bring younger siblings please be prepared to take them outside if they are disruptive. \nSee you on the trail! \n  \n  \n

Her stories\, both traditional and new\, may bring laughter\, tears\, shivers\, or a deep thought or two\, but will always entertain. \nKaren can often be found bringing the past to life at Northwest historic sites such as Job Carr Cabin Museum\, Champoeg State Heritage Area and San Juan Islands National Historic Park. Her living history presentations have been featured at National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center\, End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center and Fort Clatsop. She feels especially rewarded telling the tales of those whose voices are usually silent in history — women. \nDrawing on her experiences as a K-12 music educator\, she incorporates music and sing-alongs into many of her presentations\, often bringing along folk instruments. \nAs well as weaving words\, Karen spins and weaves fibers as she brings traditional crafts to reenactments and presentations. \nShe firmly believes that our stories tell who we are\, where we’ve come from\, and where we’re going. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Oops! SUMMARY:Living History Village at the Bohemia Mining Days Festival
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Bohemia Mining Days Festival in Cottage Grove\, Oregon on July 19th and 20th for a fun time in the kids zone! We’ll be open from 10am to 6pm both days\, but the larger festival stays open till 10pm and includes Thursday night. It’s held in Coiner Park in the middle of Cottage Grove. Admission is free but some kids zone activities are offered for a fee\, so bring some cash! \nThis year Singing Creek Center is putting on a Living History Village\, much like our festival on the farm in recent years\, with activities\, games\, crafts\, demos\, and FUN! Learn about Oregon history including settlers\, trappers and Native Americans. \nThe theme this year is Opal Whiteley\, the famous pioneer girl who lived in Cottage Grove around 1900. She has been called a “nature mystic” and wrote about her friends in nature and The Fairyland Around Us (her book title.) In her honor we are featuring a Make Your Own Fairy House booth where you can construct a fairy house to take home\, for only $1.00. \nWe are so thrilled that Coconut Bliss is sponsoring the booth with a donation of 1\,000 unused ice cream pint containers that we will be using to construct the fairy house. We are saving up all our supplies so there will be bits and baubles to glue onto your house! \nAlso we have Columbia Bank sponsoring the fairy house making booth\, so you can thank both these wonderful businesses for contributing to a successful festival this year!

SUMMARY:Open House at the Snapp House
DESCRIPTION:Come visit our new location in the historic Dr. Snapp house and learn about our programs and events. Fun kids activities and a tour await you! This is FREE and fun for all ages. Meet our Director\, Karen and experience all the unique history of the house. It sits next to a park by the Willamette River\, so you can take a walk around the park after you see the house.\nNo RSVP needed\, just come join us!\nThe house is not wheelchair accessible at this time\, though the parking lot is level and right outside the house. \nWe will now be located in the historic Dr. Snapp House in Cottage Grove\, OR at 360 S.River Road. The house is located along the Coast Fork of the Willamette River greenway. It is also adjacent to a large city park so there will be plenty of room for outside activities as well as our regular inside programs in this cozy home built in 1886. \nThe house bears the name of one of Cottage Grove’s first physicians\, Dr. G.O. Snapp. The doctor built the house to serve as his residence and office. The home has ornate exterior gingerbread features and a tall spire called a “witch’s hat” atop the front entrance. It’s a one-story house with 12.5 foot high ceilings throughout its interior and is decorated in period style. \nAn early advertisement in an 1899 issue of the Bohemia Nugget identifies Dr. Snapp as a physician and surgeon\, who also extracted teeth. There are artifacts inside the house that tell more of the story of the early and colorful doctor who served patients in Cottage Grove around the turn of the last century. \nThe home also sits next to Silk Creek where Cottage Grove’s first grist mill was located. The old grist mill is now a feed store across from the Snapp House where farmers and city folk alike come to buy their chicks\, bunnies\, farm and pet food. \nThere is also an historic “swinging bridge” near the house that is currently being renovated. This bridge served early school children who needed to cross the river to get to school located on the east side of the Willamette. \n \n
