SUMMARY:Travel in Time History Field Trip for Homeschoolers
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun afternoon learning about Oregon history at the SMJ House in Eugene!\nThis hands-on history field trip is best for ages 5 -12. Come learn about the history of the house and pioneers\, the Kalapuya people who have lived here since time immemorial\, and the fur trappers that lived in the Willamette Valley. We will have three groups that rotate every 30 minutes and explore different parts of history inside the house. Each group will get to touch and explore items from history and participate in hands on learning. Taught by Singing Creek Educational Center staff (and SMJ House staff) this field trip is perfect for homeschoolers and will work for varying ages. DESCRIPTION:Lewis and Clark: Explorers Field Trip\nCalling all homeschoolers: join us for a fun and imaginitive field trip about the Corp of Discovery and their journey to the Pacific Northwest! \nFor ages 6 – 11\, this field trip features three stations in the museum with an instructor who will teach you about history. You will get your own little paper journal for taking notes and making drawings. Your group will rotate stations every thirty minutes. \nOverview all together: 10 minutesLearn the basics of who sent them\, who went with them\, why they went and more. \nStation one: William ClarkLearn about map making\, investigate a map and use a compass. Draw your own “compass rose” and learn about trade items brought along on the journey for meetings with Native Peoples. \nStation two: Merriweather LewisLearn about plant and animal species collected on the journey. How were these preserved? What animals did they name after themselves? How did they conduct science? Draw and write with a feather quill and ink in your journal. \nStation three: Native AmericansWhat Native American tribes did they encounter along the way? Learn about some encounters that were tense and others that went smoothly. How did Sacajawea help the men on the journey? SUMMARY:Spring Outdoor School Teaching- Kalapuya Ways
DESCRIPTION:Each year in Spring and Fall\, SCEC teaches the Kalapuya Ways program for Outdoor School in the Dorena area\, for hundreds of children. \nWe provide a 45 minute unit on the First Peoples of the Willamette Valley area\, including either a stick dice game activity or throwing atlatls in the field (if the weather is good.) Children at outdoor school rotate between activities including our teaching. \nWe have been providing this education for Grove Christian Camp for many years\, and are happy to once again be participating in Spring 2025.

DESCRIPTION:Learn about the Kalapuya Indigenous people\, past and present\, with instructor Karen Rainsong. This presentation and guided hike is best for adults and teens. Bring some cash as a donation to the Friend’s of Hendricks park for this presentation. Hike will include some gentle uphill climbs and is not generally considered wheelchair friendly\, although the opening talk in the park is accessible. \nSee items of material culture\, and listen to a Kalapuya story (permission for Karen to tell this story has been given by Esther Stutzman\, a local Kalapuya elder.) DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Letitia Carson Black History Exhibit at the SMJ House\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Join us to learn about Letitia Carson\, one of the first Black women to settle in Oregon\, as you tour the beautiful Shelton McMurphey Johnson House in Eugene. Letitia became a landowner after traveling on the Oregon Trail\, and her story is unique and interesting. Though we have no photographs of her\, there are photos of her daughter and other family. \nThis is a traveling exhibit from Oregon Black Pioneers and will be up at the SMJ House from June through September\, 2025. The exhibit is a partnership between SCEC and the SMJ House.
