Enjoy visits from special guests who will teach us\, trade with us\, or share stories.  Read about the values children learn in our summer camps. \nTimes are Monday- Friday 9am to 2pm. Children aged 6-10 are welcome. Eleven year olds may also register if they are really into the theme and motivated- they may be asked to help out a bit with the younger ones. Jennifer began walking with her grandfather as a young child\, picking gleanings from the fields and finding food available in nature. She continues to enjoy this delightful treasure hunt and making healthy food for people to enjoy.

Now open 6 days a week and furnished on all three floors\, the Museum is a beautiful example of what life might have looked like in the 1930’s for the Shelton McMurphey Family. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun afternoon learning about Oregon history at the SMJ House in Eugene!\nThis hands-on history field trip is best for ages 5 -12. Come learn about the history of the house and pioneers\, the Kalapuya people who have lived here since time immemorial\, and the fur trappers that lived in the Willamette Valley. We will have three groups that rotate every 30 minutes and explore different parts of history inside the house. Each group will get to touch and explore items from history and participate in hands on learning. Taught by Singing Creek Educational Center staff (and SMJ House staff) this field trip is perfect for homeschoolers and will work for varying ages. DESCRIPTION:We are doing a Native cultural presentation with Deitrich Peters at Elkton Community Education Center in Elkton\, March 21st at 2pm. \nLearn about Kalapuya and Grand Ronde culture from Deitz\, and explore the hands-on items of Kalapuya material culture with Karen Rainsong. Karen is the E.D. of Singing Creek Educational Center and will be sharing a Kalapuya story (with the permission of Esther Stutzman\, a local Kalapuya storyteller.) \nKids are welcome but ages 8 and up are best for this presentation. \nDeitz is an accomplished flute player and maker of regalia\, and is passionate about sharing the traditions and culture of his people. SUMMARY:Spring Break History Camp at SMJ House
DESCRIPTION:History Camp for Children\nLooking for something fun to do over Spring Break? Join us for three fun filled days of history themed day camp at the beautiful Shelton McMurphey Johnson House in Eugene! \nOn Monday\, Tuesday and Wednesday you can experience hands-on activities\, games\, cooking and outside time in a lovely Victorian mansion setting. Learn about the owners of the home through time\, about pioneer life and nature on the Skinner’s Butte just behind the house. We will do butter churning\, play pioneer games\, sewing\, fun art projects and more! \nThis camp is being jointly presented by the SMJ House and SCEC. We will have instructors from both organizations bringing interesting and engaging activities for ages 6 – 10. All genders of children are welcome (children can wear whatever dress up clothing they like!) \nMarch 25th – 27th. Hours are 9am to 2pm.\nPre-registration only\, sibling discounts apply.
