SUMMARY:Indigenous Presenter Discussion on "Fear & Belonging": Consider This series
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening discussion with a well-known Kalapuya basket weaver woman\, at the Creswell Public Library. We will be hearing from her and talking about the subject “Fear & Belonging” as part of the speaker series “Consider This.” Each year\, Oregon Humanities has a different topic for this series. We were lucky enough to receive a grant from Oregon Humanities with the library to offer this series in Creswell. \nOur conversation with the indigenous presenter will focus on traditions\, the loss of those traditions\, and reclaiming or continuing them. She is an expert on Kalapuya weaving and works to pass that information on. Her work and expertise fits very well into the theme of Fear and Belonging. What is more terrifying than watching cultural traditions move from the active world to a museum? And do cultural artifacts belong in museums\, and if so\, which museums do they belong to? Her work weaving replica baskets for museums touches on this perfectly. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n These talks are free and open to the public\, though might not be appropriate for children. No need to RSVP\, you can just attend. \nDate: Monday\, April 8thTime: 5:30 pm -6:30pmLocation: Creswell Public Library\, 64 W Oregon Ave\, Creswell\, OR 97426 \nOur second speaker in this series is Deitrich Peters\, an indigenous regalia maker\, flute player and culture-bearer. Deitz’s talk is on April 25th at 5:30pm. \nFor More Information: https://oregonhumanities.org/programs/consider-this/fear-and-belonging-202324-consider-this-series/

We were lucky enough to receive a grant from Oregon Humanities with the library to offer this series in Creswell. \nOur conversation with Dietrich will focus on what it means to belong to a Native community and how that can look different to groups\, organizations\, and people. For example\, blood quantum and obtaining objects of cultural significance (eg. feathers). I am Kalapuya\, Rouge River\, and Umpqua. My given name is Cosa Tance\, meaning “Sky Dancer”. My English name is Deitrich David Peters. I was given both my grandfather’s middle names. I grew up in Oregon and love to travel to as many cultural events as I can.I love my culture and traditions – making things with my hands\, working with feathers\, beadwork\, traditional dancing\, storytelling and of course my all time favorite\, flute playing. I have learned these many things from our elders\, and have been gifted these things by the Creator.
