SUMMARY:Deitrich Peters discussion on "Fear and Belonging": Consider This Series
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening discussion with Deitrich Peters\, a Kalapuya elder\, at the Creswell Public Library. We will be hearing from Deitz and talking about the subject “Fear & Belonging” as part of the speaker series “Consider This.” Each year\, Oregon Humanities has a different topic for this series. We were lucky enough to receive a grant from Oregon Humanities with the library to offer this series in Creswell. \nOur conversation with Dietrich will focus on what it means to belong to a Native community and how that can look different to groups\, organizations\, and people. For example\, blood quantum and obtaining objects of cultural significance (eg. feathers). Dietrich’s experience navigating these systems of belonging is a perfect match for the Oregon Humanity’s theme. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n These talks are free and open to the public\, though might not be appropriate for children. No need to RSVP\, you can just attend. \nTime: 5:30 pm -6:30pmLocation: Creswell Public Library\, 64 W Oregon Ave\, Creswell\, OR 97426 \nOur other speaker in this series is an Indigenous basket weaver and culture-bearer\, on Monday\, April 8th at the same location. \nFor More Information: https://oregonhumanities.org/programs/consider-this/fear-and-belonging-202324-consider-this-series/ \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Deitrich Peters Bio\nI was born in Dallas\, Oregon and I’m a member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. I am Kalapuya\, Rouge River\, and Umpqua. My given name is Cosa Tance\, meaning “Sky Dancer”. My English name is Deitrich David Peters. I was given both my grandfather’s middle names. I grew up in Oregon and love to travel to as many cultural events as I can.I love my culture and traditions – making things with my hands\, working with feathers\, beadwork\, traditional dancing\, storytelling and of course my all time favorite\, flute playing. I have learned these many things from our elders\, and have been gifted these things by the Creator.
