SUMMARY:Lewis and Clark Field Trip for all Homeschoolers
DESCRIPTION:Lewis and Clark: Explorers Field Trip\nCalling all homeschoolers: join us for a fun and imaginitive field trip about the Corp of Discovery and their journey to the Pacific Northwest! \nFor ages 6 – 11\, this field trip features three stations in the museum with an instructor who will teach you about history. You will get your own little paper journal for taking notes and making drawings. Your group will rotate stations every thirty minutes. \nOverview all together: 10 minutesLearn the basics of who sent them\, who went with them\, why they went and more. \nStation one: William ClarkLearn about map making\, investigate a map and use a compass. Draw your own “compass rose” and learn about trade items brought along on the journey for meetings with Native Peoples. \nStation two: Merriweather LewisLearn about plant and animal species collected on the journey. How were these preserved? What animals did they name after themselves? How did they conduct science? Draw and write with a feather quill and ink in your journal. \nStation three: Native AmericansWhat Native American tribes did they encounter along the way? Learn about some encounters that were tense and others that went smoothly. How did Sacajawea help the men on the journey? Learn about Native culture in Oregon at that time and about trade routes. \nYour field trip will last about 1.75 hours. \nCost is $7 per child\, adults are free.There is no admission charge to get into the musuem. \nThis field trip is pre-registration only and we can only take up to 30 children.Please fill out the form below to register.

DESCRIPTION:Let’s make a basket by hand!\nTogether we will make a small basket from either cattails or tule and twined with raffia infused with local color. \n$65 per person ($30 materials\, $35 instruction) \nThe fee includes materials and three hours of instruction on basketry techniques using locally gathered and naturally dyed materials. Come weave with us! Instructor Jess Lambright from Wild Alive Outside also is an instructor for SCEC. She has learned basketry from an indigenous person. \n(If you don’t finish your basket on the first class\, you can come for free to the second class and bring your basket back to keep working on it. If you sign up for the second class and don’t finish your basket the instructor can stay a few minutes after class to help you finish it.) \nLocation: a rented house in Eugene\, in the University district. SUMMARY:Spring Break History Camp with SMJ House 2025
DESCRIPTION:History Camp for Children\nLooking for something fun to do over Spring Break? Join us for three fun filled days of history themed day camp at the beautiful Shelton McMurphey Johnson House in Eugene! \nOn Monday\, Tuesday and Wednesday you can experience hands-on activities\, games\, cooking and outside time in a lovely Victorian mansion setting. Learn about the owners of the home through time\, about pioneer life and nature on the Skinner’s Butte just behind the house. We will do butter churning\, play pioneer games\, sewing\, fun art projects and more! \nThis camp is being jointly presented by the SMJ House and SCEC. We will have instructors from both organizations bringing interesting and engaging activities for ages 6 – 10. All genders of children are welcome (children can wear whatever dress up clothing they like!) Children bring their own lunch and water bottle. \nMarch 24th – 26th. SUMMARY:Los Pueblos Spring Break Camp 2025
DESCRIPTION:This fun spring break camp features games\, art\, movement\, music\, and activities about the history of South America. The camp is taught by Janet Hernandez\, our Program Coordinator for the Los Pueblos programs. \nJanet has been teaching for SCEC since 2023 and is a mother of 4 children. She is bilingual English/Spanish and both languages are used in this camp. Children are often speaking in Mam (from Guatemala) as well. \nQualifying low-income families in Cottage Grove who are Guatemalan/Latino are eligible for this camp. We can only take 11 children. Please contact our Executive Director\, Karen\, to be connected to Janet who processes the registration. \nCamp is from 9am to 2pm Monday through Friday.
